Silverchair: Young Modern

Filed under: Album Review — silverneurotic @ 10:57 pm

High-strung and theoretical, Silverchair’s Young Modern deflates its own cleverness with multiplied backing vocals and chord changes that drop through trapdoors. Australians whose creamy avidity takes the baroque tendencies of forefathers such as the Easybeats to places Vanda and Young would be interested to visit, they’ve used the five years since their last batch of originals to check things out. They now sound pleasantly overwhelmed, well-traveled, and happy to be alive.

Silverchair – Young Modern

From The Celebrity Cafe.com:

- Silverchair has been around for a long time. When they released their first demo in 1994, I was only seven years old. It seems as though the band hasn’t lost any of their appeal through the years.

Complete and unedited version of Daniel Johns interview
Friday, July 13, 2007. 5 p.m.

by Ryan A. Bunch (don’t make fun of me too bad, I’m a sucky verbalizer when I’m nervous … and I think I might have actually talked more than him)

RB: First I want to say welcome back, man. I’ve been a Silverchair fan for a long time and I’m thrilled to have you guys back around.

DJ: Thank you.

RB: So how does it feel to be back playing and touring again?

DJ: It feels great actually. We feel really inspired and excited to be back and playing. We’re really proud of the album. As soon as we get back on the road, it’s going to be great.

RB: Yeah, the new album man sounds fantastic. I think it’s easily the best thing you guys have done so far. It’s really tight, the song writing is fantastic and it just sounds great and it’s totally coherent and mature statement. I think it’s beautiful.

DJ: Thanks man.

No resting in the old Silverchair

CD Review – Silverchair: Young Modern

Jonathan Van Dyke – The Daily Iowan

Issue date: 7/27/07 Section: Arts

*** 1/2 out of *****

So it’s a harrowing tale of a band that disappeared through a trapdoor into Australia. Now, the famed child prodigies of Silverchair are – poof – back with a new sleight of hand, Young Modern , an album ready to surprise audiences who are patient enough to wait for the prestige.

Fronted by Daniel Johns, the three gained fame for their first album, Frogstomp , that launched with the REM/Nirvana-territory single “Tomorrow.” Since then, the band has battled quicksilver fame, Johns’ anorexia, and chronic arthritis that shelved the band and torpedoed its last effort, Diorama . Despite the troubles, Silverchair managed to stay together and continually add more to its evolution each album. From Frogstomp ’s grunge to Neon Ballroom ’s mood rock to Diorama ’s sweeping, Beach Boy-flavored epics, the band succeeded in averting stagnation.

Pirate Dan And The ‘New’ Silverchair Rawk Roseland

From You R Here:

July 27, 2007 – Roseland Ballroom, New York, NY

Posted by John Norris (MTV News), New York, NY, at 5:52 pm EST on Sunday, July 29th, 2007

Call him Long Dan Silverchair. When Daniel Johns took the stage at New York’s Roseland Ballroom on Friday night, the singer, songwriter and auteur of the ever-evolving band known as Silverchair was sporting a bandana … and an eye patch. Now, the headgear is something he has been sporting a lot lately, but the patch was new, and as he showed me after the show, was there to cover a black eye that Johns incurred while playing the guitar with his mouth. There was even a bit of a pirate “Aaargh” to his voice, as Daniel has been battling a nasty bout of laryngitis that caused the band to postpone the first four dates of this tour.

Silverchair comes into own on long-awaited CD

From THonline.com:

‘Young Modern Station’ captures group at its best.

By of The Associated Press
Oh my, how the boys from Silverchair have grown.

Wily veterans now in their late 20’s — the Australian trio were all of 15 when they recorded their 1995 debut “Frogstomp” — Silverchair has again taken a huge leap in artistry and sophistication with its fifth longplayer, “Young Modern.”

Those who haven’t heard much from the band over the years — its breakout hit “Tomorrow” was the most-played song on American modern rock radio in 1995 — should prepare for a real eye-opener.

Lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Daniel Johns’ eloquent and passionate vocals are a far cry from his pubescent nasal wailing, and compliment complex arrangements and crack rhythm from bassist Chris Joannou and drummer Ben Gillies.

Only the pulsating title track serves as a bona fide hard rock song, with a majority of the disc relying on acoustic guitars, piano and lush orchestration courtesy of Beach Boys and U2 collaborator Van Dyke Parks.

Highlights include a diverse three-part suite in “Those Thieving Birds,” the light touch of “Reflections of a Sound” and “All Across the World,” and the sweetly romantic “Waiting All Day.”

After breaking nearly every record in the book for an Australian recording artist, it might be time for an American audience to rediscover Silverchair.

Check this track out: With soft piano that builds into a baroque pop delight, the soaring and contagious lead single, “Straight Lines,” affirms just how far Silverchair has come over the last decade.
