Sixth Album Possibly Released?

According to The Vine, the sixth Silverchair album may be released…only, as a Daniel Johns solo album…with Chris and Ben popping in as guest musicians.

Now, this is just a RUMOR…but I suppose it would be pretty awesome to hear the album that the band has been promising since 2009. Fingers crossed!

Indefinite Hibernation

I was extremely saddened to hear of the news of Silverchair’s “indefinite hibernation”, it truly feels as though it’s the end of an era. I feel as though I lost my best friend, or had my heart broken by a guy. And, in a way, it’s exactly what happened.

As of right now, I have no plans of closing this blog. It sounds like the individual band members will be busy with their own respective careers, and I want to continue to keep anyone who still comes here abreast on the latest Daniel, Ben and Chris news.

I also want this space as a place where I can pay tribute to the band that I have loved since I was 13 years old. I always meant to break the most objective feel of this blog, and, this seems like as good a time as any to start doing that.

So I’m a day late (two days if you are in Oz) but I wanted to wish Daniel a very happy birthday. I cannot believe he is 32 years old, I still can’t believe that I have been a fan of his since he was 16. Time sure does go by quickly.

Looking for fellow LASers

I have been a member of the Silverchair Fan Club (LAS) for going on 14 years now and over the years I’ve come to love being a member. The price wasn’t too bad, and we got really nice updates and gifts on a regular basis.

However, over the past ten months, the LAS has virtually died. There’s been no explanation as to what happened. One day the LAS was business as usual, the next? Complete silence. Considering I paid my yearly membership dues in July-I’ve not received a single benefit aside from having access to a similarly silent message board.

I am not impressed. At all.

So, what to do?

Well, I could sit here and bitch and complain until I’m blue in the face. Or I could actually do something about it. Which I did. Yesterday, I drafted an email to the people who run the LAS which I will be sending early next week-if not sooner.

Dear LAS,

I am writing this letter on the behalf of the current members of the LAS. In the past year, if not longer, we have noticed a sharp decline in the service and benefits that LAS members receive. Considering the fact that the LAS has increased their yearly fee to a maximum of $20 for those outside of Australia, this is unacceptable.

According to the Fan Club page, LAS members are suppose to receive a number of benefits-that SHOULD justify the $25-$30 we spend a year. However, in over six months plus, we have received very few of these benefits. In fact, the only benefits we’ve been allowed to participate in one contest and have been allowed access to a message board. Hardly worth $30. Someone pointed out that we should be receiving our goody bags in the next few weeks, which will be nice, however this is just a tiny fraction of the benefits that we are promised per the Fan Club page.

The benefits we are promised upon joining the LAS are:

Behind the scenes footage: For awhile the LAS was really good at providing this, however, the last video was posted in May of 2010, ten months ago.
Performance video: Perhaps I’m mistaken, but I don’t recall ever being given access to performance videos.
Up to date news: This truly is a laugh. The ONLY exclusive news that we’ve been given lately is news about the one aforementioned contest, and the contest winners. The band has been busy, both with the new album and own personal endevours such as Daniel writing a film score, Chris’s various projects with other musicians, charity, etc. And Ben got married this year…yet, the LAS has not updated the fan club members with any of this information.
Exclusive photos: Again, we have not received an exclusive picture since May of 2010.
Contests: The LAS has held one contest this year. Contests denotes that there are multiple contests. Why not hold drawings at random times during the year as you used to in the past?
Forum: This is all well and good, but without news, there’s only so many topics we can recycle and talk about and the public version of Chairpage offers one as well. According to the website, the band is suppose to post updates and news. I believe it’s been about a year since any of the band members have visited the site and posted.
Wall of Fame: This is about the only thing that is active, and that’s because the fans are the ones who supply the pictures for it. Perhaps this can be expanded to more than just pictures of artwork/tattoos though. Perhaps there should be a section for writers who would like to share their Silverchair inspired words.
Newsletters: We have not received a newsletter in a year. It was March 23, 2010 since the last one was sent out. Before the LAS went digital, we received 3-4 newsletters a year regardless of whether the band was taking a break or actively working on an album or touring. Now that everything is digital, newsletters should be coming out with the same frequency, especially as it’s cheaper, quicker. As mentioned above in regards to news, there has been news.
Store: It doesn’t seem to be updated too often.
Concert tickets: Granted, the band has not been touring, however, this benefit is primarily for Australians. Something should be done for non-Australian members in some form or another. For example, with proof of ticket purchase a free poster or teeshirt through the LAS.
Goodie bags: This is about the only consistent thing LAS members have been offered.

As you can see, for nearly a year now, LAS members have been essentially getting ripped off. We’re promised certain benefits that we’re just not receiving without any explanation as to why not. This needs to change, there needs to be an open and honest communication as to why we’ve not been receiving the goods that we are promised.

We all love supporting the LAS and Silverchair and in the past the LAS has done a truly amazing job at making the fan club a worthwhile and fun investment, however, we’re concerned about the future of the fan club. We hope that one day soon it returns to the complete “awesomeness” that it once was.
