If you have a watch you never wear anymore, don’t let it sit around gathering dust. Trade it in for something you actually need.
Sometimes a wristwatch is a deeply sentimental object. Maybe it’s a watch that originally belonged to your great-great-grandfather, who passed it down to your great-grandfather, who gave it to your grandfather, until that watch eventually came down to you. Those kinds of watches are treasured keepsakes. They remind you of your family, your ancestors—the ones you did know, and the ones you never met. Those watches remind you who you are.
Other times, though, a watch is just a watch.
Say your ex-girlfriend bought you a watch a few years ago. You hated it, but you pretended to like it for her sake. Now the girlfriend is gone and you’re stuck with the watch. How do you get rid of it?
Or say you bought yourself a watch years ago, for no reason. You’ve got nothing in particular against the watch now. It’s just that you’ve moved up in the world since you bought the old thing. You’d like to have something that better reflects your fine new standing, your higher status. So how do you get rid of the watch?
If it was a piece of paper, of course, you could throw it away—or, if you’re a little more conscientous, you could toss it into a recycling bin. But a watch is not a piece of paper.
If you were in to arts and crafts, you could make the watch into a bookmark or stick it into a scrapbook. But why go to all that trouble for something that won’t give you much in return?
The smartest thing you can do with an old watch you never wear anymore is to trade it in. Whether you trade it in for a new watch or a totally different item—a guitar, a toilet, a winter coat—you’ll be exchanging something you don’t need and never use for something that you actually do need and will use. What could be smarter than that? Don’t let your old watches sit around gathering dust in your dressers. Pick them up, dust them off, and trade them in. You’ll have your pick of places to choose from, and you’ll have your pick of objects to take home instead. Always wanted to learn to play a keyboard but never had the funds? Now you could! Treat yourself to something that will make you happy.
